5/01/2007 | Marker: Memorial Plaque

F. Hooper Bond of Claiborne, a local attorney, advocate for education and decorated Korean War veteran, died May 1, 2007, at Memorial Hospital at Easton. He is remembered as a voice for education for all children in Talbot County and a man who stood up for what he believed. Bond was a graduate of St. Paul’s School, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Baltimore School of Law.

He served as a U.S. Army officer in the Korean War, where he was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star of Valor and a Purple Heart. “He was very quiet, he was in Korea and nobody ever knew he was there,” said G. Allen Whiteley, of Easton, a fellow Korean War veteran who served on the Talbot County Board of Education with Bond. Bond began his legal career as a partner in the law firm of Niles, Barton and Wilmer in Baltimore. After working there for 20 years, he went into private practice in Easton in 1980. He was general counsel for Independent Can Company for 45 years.

But Bond spent much of his life as an advocate for education. “He was very helpful and thought that every child in Talbot County should have an education,” said Whiteley. “He will certainly be missed by some people, especially down in Claiborne where he lived.”

He represented Johns Hopkins University and served on the board of Friends School of Baltimore. Bond also had a lifelong interest in buildings and construction. He was a member of the Society of the Sons of the Revolution, Alpha Delta Phi, Religious Society of Friends, Third Haven Monthly Meeting at Easton. “I think he’ll be remembered fondly by people who knew him,” said Laurence Claggett, also a member of the Third Haven Friends Meeting. “He was a nice guy, and he did what he thought was right.”

Bond is survived by his wife Rosalie Tunis (Molly) Bond of Claiborne; his three children, Priscilla Bond Morris Sener and her husband, John T. Sener, of Easton, Owen Upshur Bond of Claiborne and Alexander Magruder Bond and his wife, Christin Dickey, of Easton; and his three grandchildren, Allison Morris of Kilauea, Hawaii, and Lucy Lamm Bond and Zadoc Hooper Bond, both of Easton. Memorial service was May 12, 2007, at Third Haven.
