Harriet Weaver Claggett

Harriet Weaver Claggett of Easton, MD, died on July 6, 2016, at Talbot Hospice. She was 93. Born January 25, 1923 in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Harold Pratt Weaver and Harriet Comstock Weaver. Raised in Philadelphia, she was schooled from first grade onward at Germantown Friends School, from which she graduated in 1940. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa from Randolph Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA in 1944. Upon graduation, she taught Latin and Ancient History at Springside School in Philadelphia until 1948.
She married John Klopfer of Pittsburgh in 1948, and lived in Montreal, Mexico City, Brussels, Rome and Summit, NJ. She devoted herself to raising her family. She volunteered and worked for the blind, those with cerebral palsy, and women's health services. She was always very active in the Episcopal Church. She and Mr. Klopfer were divorced in 1984.
Having lived on the Eastern Shore since 1980, she married Ellwood T. Claggett of Easton in 1987. Mrs. Claggett enjoyed listening to music, reading, sewing, gardening, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. At her church, she sang in the choir and served on Altar Guild and the Vestry. She was an enthusiastic member of her book club. Among her greatest pleasures were nature walks and travels with her husband. Mr. Claggett died in 1999.
She was predeceased by her son, Albert Lee Klopfer, IV, in 2008. She is survived by her son, George Mathewson Klopfer, her daughter-in-law, Elinor McLaren; her daughter, Harriet Comstock Lent; her son-in- law, Roger Lent; her stepsons, Ellwood Tylor Claggett, Jr., and Herschell B. Claggett; her daughter-in-law, Jane Lowney; her grandchildren, Tracy Klopfer and John Klopfer; and many stepgrandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. Memorial service was at All Faith Chapel in Tunis Mills. A private burial was at Third Haven.
