John David Shoffner

John David Shoffner of Denton died January 19, 2009, at the Easton Hospital. Born February 2, 1919, in Loveland, Colorado, just two weeks shy of his 90th birthday, the son of the late Frederick David and Oma Shoffner.
In 1948, he married Ellen Bilbrough of Greensboro, MD, who died in 2004.
Upon his retirement, they moved to Denton in 1984 and he most recently lived at Candlelight Cove in Easton.
Mr. Shoffner served more than three years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was trained as a flight engineer but also flew as co-pilot. He was part of the "Mighty Eighth Air Force" and participated in 65 B-26 bombing missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. He received the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross for a daring raid against German 16-inch cannons on the Cherbourg Peninsula in France. He was also awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement. After the war Mr. Shoffner was a materials and testing engineer for Stone and Webster Inc. Among his other worldwide work assignments, Mr. Shoffner supervised the building of an air base on Johnston Island in the North Pacific. His final project was working on a nuclear power plant being built on the shores of Lake Ontario.
Mr. Shoffner became a Mason in 1946, in Colorado, while he was working at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. He took great pride in being a Mason for more than 60 years. The Meeting held a Memorial Service Februay 21, 2009.
