Rosalie Tunis McCormick (Molly) Bond of Claiborne, a Master Gardener and an avid sailor, died August 23, 2015, in Claiborne. She was 78. Born in Spokane, Washington on May 5, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Captain Harry Ogle Tunis and Sara Katherine Caulk Tunis McCormick. She was raised in Trappe, Maryland and later in Baltimore. She spent her summers at Maple Hall in Claiborne, Maryland which was her great-grandparents home. She was an alumna of Roland Park Country School and attended the Duke University School of Nursing. In 1956, she married F. Hooper Bond, a lawyer. They lived in Baltimore where she was active in fundraising through the Junior League and the Roland Park Country School Alumnae Association. Molly believed all children should be engaged with the Chesapeake Bay. To that end, she served on the Board of The Maryland Academy of Sciences and raised money to build the Maryland Science Center on Baltimoreâ Inner Harbor.
She and Hooper joined the Baltimore Monthly Meeting of Friends, Stoney Run, in the early 1960 where she taught First Day School. In 1968, Molly and Hooper bought a house in Claiborne that was a former Friends School of Baltimore summer camp on land that had been part of Maple Hall Farm. They became Talbot County residents in 1973 and transferred from Stony Run to the Third Haven Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, where she served as Treasurer for 11 years. In addition, she served on the Board of the Historical Society of Talbot County for several decades.
She is the author of Treasurer Guide for Religious Organizations, still available in the second edition from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. In Claiborne, Molly pursued her two lifelong interests, gardening and sailing. She loved sailing starting at age two, when she rode aboard a log canoe tied to the mast. She raced on the log canoe Daisy Belle in her teens, sharing an outrigger with Judge John Raine, Jr. As an adult she raced on Hugh Kabler’s Inka for many years. Molly gardened as a child, was interested in edible wild plants, and always raised her own vegetables. In 2010 she became a Master Gardener and provided consultations to property owners. Her primary interest was in native plants and erosion control to protect the Chesapeake Bay. She was very pleased to have her land certified as a Maryland Bay-Wise Program property after 40 years of land management improvements to reduce runoff. She created a Claiborne community garden on her property and served as Treasurer of the Claiborne Community Association.
Molly was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-one years, F. Hooper Bond. She is survived by her three children: Priscilla Bond Morris Sener and her husband, John Ten Eyck Sener, Owen Upshur Bond, all of Claiborne, Alexander Magruder Bond and his wife, Christin Louise Dickey, of Easton; and by her three grandchildren: Allison Morris of Asheville, North Carolina, and Lucy Lamm Bond and Zadoc Hooper Bond, both of Easton. She was a fond mother-in-law to William Morris of Trappe, Maryland. Memorial service was August 29, 2015, at Third Haven.
