S. Dean Caldwell III

S. Dean Caldwell III formerly of Swarthmore, PA and Easton, MD, died on Sat., April 20, 2002 at the Medford Leas Retirement Community in Medford, N.J. He was 90 years old. Born in Bethesda, MD, Mr. Caldwell attended Sidwell Friends School, Swarthmore College, and Georgetown University, where he received an MS in International Law in 1936. After graduating from Georgetown, he spent three years at the Dept. of Labor helping to compile the Occupational Dictionary, a year in the Social Security Administration, and several years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture helping to set up and administer School Lunch Programs, Food Stamp Plans and direct distribution of surplus commodities in several states. He left the government in 1946, and sold real estate and insurance in Reno, Nevada, where he met and married Jane Kennedy Bew. They moved to Swarthmore, PA, in 1954, where he took a job with Fidelity Bank in Phila. He served as an Estate Planner and Trust Officer at Fidelity (now First Union Bank) until his retirement in 1976. A life-long member of the Religious Society of Friends, Mr. Caldwell was Clerk of Swarthmore Friends Meeting for 11 years and served on the boards of several Quaker organizations. He retired to Easton, MD, in 1978, where he enjoyed sailing his 29' Islander on the Chesapeake and served a team as Commander of the Miles River Power Squadron. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane Kennedy Caldwell, of Medford, N.J., a son Samuel D. Caldwell IV of Media, PA, a daughter Narrye Davis Caldwell of Boulder Creek, CA, a stepdaughter Jane Bew Jennings of Monroe, N.J., a stepson Richard Bew of Cape May Point, N.J., 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service was June 1, 2002 at Third Haven.
