Thomas Matthews Bartlett of Easton, MD, who died at age 83 on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Born in Easton, MD on June 13, 1925. He was the son of the late Frederick and Dorothy Bartlett. A lifetime resident of Talbot County, he lived at “Wakefield”. He graduated from George School in Pennsylvania and during World War II enlisted early in 1944 in the U.S. Navy in the North Atlantic before assignment on the U.S.S. Rednour in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946. His ship was badly damaged by aircraft in the Battle of Okinawa.
Mr. Bartlett worked in construction for many years before owning the Brinsfield Fence Company. He retired in 1989. He was a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club, formerly a Commodore of the Tred Avon Yacht Club and the American Legion. An avid sailor, he participated many times in the Newport-Bermuda races. A sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. A life-long member of Third Haven Friends Meeting, he was a respected member of the community and was appreciated for his integrity and high principles. He teamed with McKenny Willis and Charles Owens in 1960 to survey and document the burial ground at Third Haven. Active in meeting maintenance, Tommy was known to have painted the Old Meeting House.
Mr. Bartlett is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanine Boruch Bartlett; two daughters, Mary Dixon Bartlett and Isabelle Bartlett Osman; two grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Osman and one granddaughter, Lillian Jeanine Tolley and many nieces and nephews. Private interment at Third Haven.
